| Breastfeeding Essentials I: Feeding Your Baby! | |||||||
| Newborn babies come out ready to nurse! Breastfeeding is a natural choice, but it is still a learned skill for baby and mom that takes patience, persistence, and good advice during the early weeks. While close to 75% of new moms in the U.S. start out breastfeeding, by 3 months the rate drops to nearly 30%. Prenatal preparation closes this gap, and gives you the tools you need to succeed with a minimum of worry and stress.
This class will cover everything you need to know ahead of time to help ease the transition for you and your baby, including recognizing baby's early hunger cues, appropriate feeding schedules, proper positioning and correct latch on, how long and how often to nurse, and how to avoid, recognize, and solve common breastfeeding concerns. Advice about breastfeeding abounds. Not all of it is helpful or accurate. The first weeks with your baby are stressful enough without trying to learn this new skill from scratch. Knowing what to do ahead of time will alleviate a lot of stress during those first days and weeks, and will increase the likelihood of successful breastfeeding. Our instructor, a Mom & Baby Nurse and Lactation Counselor, will also help you learn to sort out the helpful information from the non-helpful information you may receive while in the hospital and from well meaning family and friends. For 9 months you have done everything you can to grow your baby healthy and strong. Don't stop now! You can breastfeed your baby successfully with good prenatal education and appropriate support during the early days and weeks after birth. We are here for you! Only at Baby Moon can you get individualized instruction from the most qualified experts in the field. We keep our class sizes small to better tailor the information to your needs. We are happy to accomodate mamas with special needs in our classes, such as mothers of multiples and even adoptive nursers. This class is essential for all pregnant women planning to breastfeed for the first time. Your support person is always welcome and encouraged to attend with you. We recommend you complete your classes before 36-37 weeks, so please plan ahead! Breastfeeding Essentials II is recommended for moms who will be returning to work within 12 weeks after birth, or who plan to be away from baby while breastfeeding. Instructor: Elizabeth Stapleton, RN, CLC. Two Hour Workshop, $30 per mama/couple Prenatal Basics Discount Package: See Breastfeeding Calendar for upcoming dates, or REGISTER NOW.

| Breastfeeding Essentials II: Pumping & Being Away from Your Baby |
|||||||
| Part II of our Breastfeeding Essentials series will focus on the ins and outs of maintaining a healthy and successful breastfeeding relationship when you have to be away from baby. This class is essential for moms planning to return to work within 12 weeks of birth, and also appropriate for any mom who plans to be away from baby while breastfeeding (date night? shopping spree??).
In this class we will learn how to continue breastfeeding successfully when you are away from baby. We will learn how and when to start pumping, how and when to introduce the bottle, and how to keep up your milk supply while you are away from baby. We will talk about how to safely pump, store, reheat, and serve breastmilk. If you already have a pump, please bring it and we will show you how it works. If you have not yet purchased your pump we can help you choose the right pump for your needs. (We can also get you a $5 OFF coupon if you choose to buy your pump at Mother Nurture!) Waiting until you are home with baby, sleep deprived, and hormonal to figure all this out is a recipe for stress and even failure. Having a plan in place now, before baby arrives, will help you to enjoy your time at home with baby, while still meeting your goals for a smooth transition back into your life. This class is recommended for all mamas who will be returning to work within 12 weeks after birth, or who plan to be away from baby for while breastfeeding. It is appropriate and recommended for pregnant women and their partners who have already taken Breastfeeding Essentials I, or pregnant women (and partners) who have nursed a baby before. Partners are always welcome and encouraged to attend. Please bring your pump if you have one (don't worry--you won't be asked to demonstrate!). See Breastfeeding Calendar for upcoming dates, or REGISTER NOW. |

| Breastfeeding Support | |||||
| If you are a typical mom giving birth today, you are likely to receive one to two days of breastfeeding help in the hospital (which may or may not come from a qualified lactation specialist), and then you're on your own. As you might imagine, this approach is not proving to be particularly successful. First time moms need more help in the days and weeks that follow, as your milk comes in and you and your baby figure things out. And because every baby is a unique individual, even experienced nursing moms may require additional support with a new baby who is different from the first.
The first few weeks of breastfeeding can be very trying times--but rest assured that with the proper support you can do it. While your doctor may be very supportive of breastfeeding, pediatricians are not breastfeeding experts. If you are having any issues with breastfeeding, including pinching or pain, or if baby is gaining weight slowly or not at all, please don't continue to try to figure this out on your own! Most of the time a simple suggestion from a breastfeeding professional is all it takes to make your life MUCH easier. Most moms need extra support during this early period of adjustment (it will get better!); other moms may find they need help later on, when going back to work or dealing with other issues that may arise. Breastfeeding Consultations are offered through our partners at Mother Nurture, with their Certified Lactation Consultant Janie Weatherford (IBCLC), and Certified Lactation Counselor Kristi Rhode. And because it's us, you can trust that the advice you receive is based on current research and identified best practices, to support you in your decision to breastfeed your baby. If you have ANY questions or concerns, if it is painful to nurse your baby, if you are "hooked" on nipple shields, if baby is gaining weight slowly or not at all, please don't spend another day worrying or wondering. We can address all the common concerns, check your baby's latch, and provide simple, helpful adjustments to immediately relieve your discomfort and promote a successful breastfeeding relationship. We can also help you identify the more serious health concerns, and provide one-on-one counsultations to address your needs. PLEASE don't wait until you feel like giving up to ask for help! Our consultations are far less expensive than the cost of formula-feeding your baby (formula runs $1500+ in the first year). Invest in your breastfeeding relationship now, and your child will be rewarded with improved health and vitality for a lifetime. Latch Check Clinic The Certified Lactation Counselors at Mother Nurture are experts at diagnosing and solving common breastfeeding concerns. They will listen to you, watch you and your baby, and provide solutions in a gentle and caring way to facilitate a successful breastfeeding relationship for both you and your baby. Counselors will also help to identify when more serious concerns are present, and provide a referral for one-on-one support with our IBCLC when appropriate. We recommend that all breastfeeding moms come in for a Latch Check during the first week at home with baby. We can observe your positioning and latch, assess your baby's weight gain, and make sure that you and baby are on the right track. Catching and correcting breastfeeding issues early on is crucial to maintaining your successful breastfeeding relationship! Latch Check Clinics are offered once per week in a small group setting and by appointment, $25. Please call Mother Nurture at 859.335.5949 for information and current clinic schedules. Private Consultations Private appointments with an IBCLC are available at our place or yours, and are especially important when baby has lost 10% or more of their birth weight, for babies with more involved medical or health concerns, and when one-on-one help is needed or issues are not easily resolved in the Clinic. Breastfeeding should not be painful! Before you give up, get dependent on a nipple shield, or start pumping and bottle feeding, please call us for help! The sooner you call, the easier it usually is to correct the concerns and get you and baby back on the right track. In order to get the most from your session, please try to schedule so that your baby is ready to nurse during your appointment time (without being overly hungry and frustrated!). We say this knowing full well that it is difficult to plan with a newborn. Just do your best.
Schedule Your Consultation Drop-ins are welcome to the Latch Check Clinic. Please call Mother Nurture at 859.335.5949 to verify current clinic schedule. Private Breastfeeding Consultations are available by appointment, at our place or yours. Please call Mother Nurture at 859.335.5949.
