Pregnancy Massage
Growing a new person is hard work. The areas where you hold tension during pregnancy are most likely the same areas where you will hold tension during labor. Learning to relax the body during the activity of labor is one of the most effective methods of reducing pain. Regular pregnancy massage can help you prepare for birth by releasing chronic tension in the lower back, abdomen, and inner thighs, and, even more importantly, by teaching you to identify and consciously release your tension. |

Pre-Labor Massage This time of waiting can be very stressful, emotional, and exhausting. For most women anxiety builds as the due date approaches. Will this baby ever come? Will he fit?? Can I do it? (Answers below). While these feelings are normal and healthy, excessive stress and anxiety can negatively impact the course of your labor. |

A pre-labor massage may be especially calming and reassuring for moms experiencing days or weeks of pre-labor symptoms, and also for moms who have been on "resort-style" bedrest and have thus been unable to release stress from the body through other physical means. (If you have any medical conditions it is important to consult with your care provider before beginning any type of activity, including massage.) At 40+ weeks, a pre-labor massage can also be used to encourage the natural onset of labor, if desired. Pressure points in the body can be stimulated through touch to strengthen contractions and support labor progress. Soon, your body will be working very hard to birth your baby. Support your body to do its best work, and treat yourself to a pre-labor massage now--you may be surprised by the power of touch. (Answers: a. Your baby will come when he or she is good and ready. b. Yes, your body has a knack for growing a baby that fits. c. You can and you will!) Pre-Labor Massage Details: Prenatal massage is a therapeutic technique specifically designed for the childbearing year, and can be modified for most stages of pregnancy. It is safe and effective for relieving the discomforts of pregnancy and promoting maternal and fetal well-being. Massage is typically done lying on the side. A pregnancy table (with room and support for your belly) is also available upon request. Your body will be completely covered with only the body part being worked on exposed. For best results and for your safety, please pre-hydrate by drinking at least one liter (about 32 ounces) of water throughout the day prior to your appointment. Recommended for women in the last weeks of pregnancy. Our pre-labor therapists are certified and knowledgable about the needs of pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. < back to top > |

When Mama's happy, everyone is happy. Postpartum massage is a technique specifically designed to help restore the body to its pre-pregnancy condition, and to address the stress of carrying and caring for a newborn. Postural integrity can be slowly restored through postpartum massage, by reawakening the core muscles of the abdomen, back, and pelvis. Postpartum massage can also help to speed recovery by relieving sore muscles and helping you to relax. And since your baby is highly sensitive to your moods, a more relaxed Mama means a more relaxed baby. Newborns are very good at sleeping, so bring baby along for the first massage if you like. Or, bring a friend or loved one along to care for him or her close-by while you take this hour for yourself. We think you'll find it makes life at home just a little bit easier for everyone. |

| Postpartum Massage Details: Postpartum massage is a therapeutic technique designed specifically for the postpartum period (birth - one year), and is appropriate for women who gave birth either vaginally or by cesarean. Women with an uncomplicated vaginal birth may safely receive massage as early as 2 days after birth, and ideally within a week of birth to help restore the body most effectively and speed recovery. Women who have given birth by cesarean should wait 2 weeks before the first massage. Your body will be completely covered, with only the body part being worked on exposed. Emphasis is on your safety and comfort. For best results and for your safety, please pre-hydrate by drinking at least one liter (about 32 ounces) of water throughout the day prior to your appointment.

| Infant Massage Workshops
Communicate through touch. Baby massage promotes strengthening of the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems (not yet fully developed at birth), helps to relieve the discomfort associated with gas, constipation, and colic, stimulates brain development, and can promote a more restful sleep. Infant massage movements also help to encourage circulation, moving nutrients and proteins through the body more effectively and strengthening the immune system. For a baby, touch is the primary means of communiction. Your baby reads more than you know from your touch, and responds to your moods. In first-time parents, parents of preemies or high-needs babies, and adoptive parents especially, infant massage can help introduce early confidence and relaxation in holding and responding to your new baby. |
